As a Moscow correspondent for the L.A. Times and a reporter for the New York Times, Goldberg's life was driven by career deadlines. Yet, like her friends Jones, a recently divorced writer, and Ferdinand, a single reporter for the Washington Post, Goldberg longed for a child. Having just ended a relationship, Goldberg decided to order eight vials of sperm from California Cryobank, a deceptively hopeful maneuver that pushed all three down the path toward motherhood. That they actually make it, and find long-term relationships along the way, makes for a happy journey, but the power of this three-pronged narrative is the trio's candor regarding the compromises and complications that arise in the process of becoming mothers. Ironically, the anonymous vials of sperm never fulfill their intended purpose, but instead become a symbol of empowerment, giving each woman the green light to let go of bad relationships, find fulfilling new connections, and determine their own destinies. This personal, carefully recounted tale will resonate with any career woman wondering if it's too late to have it all.
*****

Well, what can I say, I felt like there were shades of Elizabeth Gilbert from Eat Pray Love in here.  I found I had nothing in common with any of these women other than the fact that, well we're women.

Each one of these gals want a child.  They all let the careers take front and center, then suddenly realized that time was running out.  Kinda made me think of Marissa Tomei from My Cousin Vinny tapping her foot saying "My biological clock is ticking."  Carey even said she wished her friends who had older children would have told her how special this having a baby is and she would have made it a priority sooner.

Supposedly friends, but I didn't get that, more like acquaintances other than the vial of sperm from an anonymous donor they passed around to each other tying them together.  The book chronicles their trials and tribulations of making the decision, finding love and the joy and sometimes sorrow that pregnancy brings, ultimately with each having their beautiful babies.

These were very "progressive" liberal thinking women, sometimes promiscuous, and free spirited.  All would be considered quite comfortable financially.  World travelers going here and there at the drop of a dime.  I'm no prude, but when Beth's boyfriend to be doesn't wanna jump in the sack with her after the first date she is shocked because she always thought you f**k em first then you see if you like all the other stuff about em.  Yes I used the crude word there not her, she just said sex, because that is basically what she did with a lot of guys, one of them 21 years old to her late 37 or 8.  This is so not my way of thinking.   Nor is jetting off to Africa for 21 days leaving my baby and husband behind.  I couldn't leave any of them for that long!!  When my Dad passed in 09, I took my kids and stayed with my Mom for almost 3 weeks and that was just too long to be away from my husband, we both hated it. I will never do that again, it was only the very sad and extenuating circumstances that provoked it.

As you can see, this just wasn't the book for me.  I come from a totally different background and upbringing.  Italian, very close family all living near each other with old fashioned values.  No nannies or jet setting, no grandma babysitting up the wazoo.  Our families very involved in each of our lives, usually most find it almost claustrophobic, and I see the difference in families here in So Cali from my raising in Brooklyn New York pushing children outta the nest at 18, where as we stay, some if they don't marry never leaving.  To each his own.

Ok girls, you can go over to Marce's blog and post your answers on her blog, as well as link your review and q-n-a *HERE*

Q-n-A (spoiler alert)

1) Who was your favorite out of Carey, Beth or Pam?  Also, who was your favorite male?

I really didn’t like any of them but if I have to choose it would be Carey.  Which male, I think Phil, Beth’s husband.

2)  What was your favorite or memorable scene?

Well it sure wasn’t my favorite scene but the one that stuck out the most was how Beth went on an African safari leaving her baby and husband for 21 days!  I’ll  never forget going to the Pocono’s in Pennsylvania for two nights when our oldest was 4, we dropped her off at my mom’s and were barely to the corner when Hubby looks at me and says “If 1 tear falls, I’ll turn around.”  I hate to leave my children and didn’t leave a single one of them until they turned 4 and then for only 1 or 2 nights.

3)  Do you think there is an age females should consider the cut off to become a mom, single or not?

Well considering how they each suffered their losses, maybe, I can’t say for sure.  I know with my last guy, I was 39 when I had him and I did the amnio just so we could be prepared God forbid of something.

4)  How do you think the friendships played a role in this book?

Ha, I didn’t really get the close friendship vibe other than good ole sperm donor 8282 being the common denominator.  Yes, they all had writing backgrounds but I don’t think they were best buds.

5)  What do you think about women choosing to become a single mom?  What changes do you see happening in your lifetime with regard to women?

I’m not big on the choosing to have a baby cuz your body clock is ticking dad or no dad.  I feel society has minimized the importance of a father right down to portraying him as a silly buffoon on tv sitcoms.  Dads are an extremely necessary part of a child’s life.  That doesn’t mean that you stay in a bad marriage, but two parents is the ideal situation.

6)  If you were seeking a sperm donor, would you choose an anonymous sperm donor or a known donor? What would you do if a friend offered to donate his sperm?

I can’t even answer this because I would never do it.  If I wasn’t married I would not have a child end of story.

7)  If you wanted a child and your partner didn’t, what would you do?

Cry my fricken eyes out.  That would be something you should talk about before planning marriage.

8)  If you could have a child but not a partner, or a partner but not a child, which would you choose?

A partner.  Again, raising kids is hard enough with my husband, we have six, I wouldn’t want to do it alone.

Since time began, there have been Nightwalkers - the races of the night who live in the shadows of the moonlight. Love with humans is absolutely forbidden, and one man makes certain to uphold this ancient law: Jacob, the Enforcer...For 700 Years, He has resisted temptation. But not tonight...Jacob knows the excuses his people give when the madness overtakes them and they fall prey to their lust for humans. He's heard every one and still brought the trespassers to justice. Immune to forbidden desires, uncontrollable hungers, or the curse of the moon, his control is total...until the moment he sees Isabella on a shadowy New York City street. Saving her life wasn't in his plans. Nor were the overwhelming feelings she arouses in him. But the moment he holds her in his arms and feels the soft explosion of her body against his, everything changes. Their attraction is undeniable, volatile, and completely against the law. Suddenly everything Jacob has ever believed is inflamed by the heat of desire...Bring on the night.
*****

Isabella shares an apartment in the Bronx with her sister.  She tends to be a bit of a loner, a bookworm, can't seem to find that special someone.  While gazing out at the moon, she once again has that restless feeling that something is just missing from her.  Then she spots him, an absolutely gorgeous man dressed impeccably and walking at midnight in her not so safe neighborhood.  While leaning out a bit too far from her fifth floor window she tumbles right into this delicious man's arms, but he isn't just any man, he's Jacob the Demon Enforcer out to find the necromancer that summoned and his fellow demon Saul and Saul as well, who has in all likelihood been transformed beyond hope of recovery.

Jacob has a job, to keep all demons in line when it's the full moon, away from humans and the harm they might inflict upon them.  The moon provokes them to fulfill their lustful feelings and humans would not survive it.  He has had to punish his friends and family, and it pains him that he is viewed in fear.  He himself has no time for women, till Isabella falls into his arms.

The two together find out that they are a prophecy coming to fruition and they will fight the evil together.

I like this book, first time reading Frank and she was pretty good, sometimes it got a little goofy but that was ok, I'll continue with the series in the future when I'm in the mood for some light fun.  The characters were entertaining and I enjoyed getting to know them.

When aspiring L.A. interior designer Jesse Holtz loses her dearest friend, Cecile, in a car accident, shes sideswiped by grief. Cecile was always the most beguiling girl in the roomthe kind of girl Jesse always wished she could be. With no manual for how to mourn when youre a 29-year-old with an eye for flea market finds but terrible taste in men, Jesse turns to the only person who understandsCeciles widower, Zach. Then, life takes an unexpected turn: Is Jesses friendship with Zach starting to feel like the beginnings of a romance? Or is Jesse just losing perspective as she juggles her feelings and her condescending boss? And what if she and Zach got togetherwould she lose all her other friends in the process? For Jesse, the questions keep piling up, with answers nowhere in sight. A tragic comedy that makes for a breathtakingly optimistic read, FINISHING TOUCHES is the story of a woman who just might learn that life, like any good interior, can always use a little rearranging.
*****

Jesse, Cecile, and Brynn are best friends since college, debunking the myth that a trio of girls can not be best friends.  Cecile is the beauty, Brynn is the brains and Jesse feels like the wall flower who always cuts herself short never giving herself any credit for her talent or seeing herself as the pretty woman she is.

Brynn is married to Cecile's fiance Zack's friend David and Jesse is never made to feel like the third wheel.  These guys know that they are thick as thieves and never try to come between them.  The girls have a bitch and knit night, they play tennis, and now they are planning Cec and Zack's wedding.  In a terrible twist Cecile is killed in an accident and they all are knocked for a horrible loop.

Zack starts reaching out to Jesse, and feelings start to come back up, back up?  Yup, Jesse actually met Zack first at a frat party nine years ago, but I won't tell you what the deal with that was, you'll have to read it :p  It's awkward, and stressful and what happens is understandable.... I guess.

I liked this book, I'm not that into chick lit, so I take it in very small thought out doses.  This book didn't disappoint me, it did make me feel sad at the loss of a friend, even shocking me when you know she's going to die right there in the description.  It also makes you wonder why us girls don't have a damn bro code like the guys.  Sometimes I was angry, but I'm VERY opinionated, can get very hot tempered and don't have any trouble speaking my mind so I often read what these character do and say to myself, "Oh no no no no!!!  That is NOT gonna go on here!"  But it's a book and all are different so I need to take it in stride :)

All in all I'd recommend it, this is the first time reading Kizis, and she had a great flowing style.  I read it for my book club and can't wait for the disussion.

Dead Reckoning

Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 11)

Dead Reckoning
Charlaine Harris
325 pgs
Ace Hardcover

Amazon Blurb -

With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but her attention is divided when she realizes that her lover Eric Northman and his "child" Pam are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, Sookie is drawn into the plot-which is much more complicated than she knows...
*****

Sam's bar - Merlotte's has been firebombed and Sookie caught a glimpse of the being who did it.  While it wasn't damaged very badly, Sam has been seeing a loss in customers due to Vamp Victor, Eric and Pam's new "master" and his new place taking business.  The thought is that because Sam is a shifter that's why it was done.

Meanwhile Eric and her relationship is suffering from some strain since Eric is hiding something from her, to the point of Pam and Eric have a fistfight in Sookie's kitchen because Pam thinks he needs to level with Sookie.  She has also done something with the help of Amelia her witch friend that has changed her and Eric's relationship drastically and infuriated Eric.

Her cousin Claude and great uncle Dermot are still living with her and she is discovering some more Fae tidbits about her life.  She has found a very special trinket her Grandma left hidden that she never got the chance to give to Sookie.

Victor is baiting Eric something fierce, hurting Pam emotionally in the hopes they'll strike out at him and he can then kill them.  Sookie will help them of course, but will the secret Eric is keeping finish Sookie and Eric once and for all?  And was that firebombing really meant for Sam....

Some really funny quotes -

Eric eyed Immanuels coiffure with fascinated disgust.  "This is the one you brought to correct Sookie's hair?"  "Mirium says he's the best I haven't had a haircut in 150 years." Pam said shrugging. "How would I know?"
"Look at him!" - exchange between Eric and Pam over the hairstylist fixing Sookie's burned hair.

"And to  descend a few levels to the carnal, you have a pair of breasts that should win the Miss America Tit Competition, if there was such a thing."  Bill to Sookie.

I liked this book much better than the last.  It wasn't the best one in the series, but I really enjoyed it, there were a couple of pulls on my heartstrings here.  The fact that there is only one more left makes me very sad!

May Wrap Up

May has come and gone and now summer reading will begin!  I don't read anymore or less once the summer comes but t he lazy days lends itself to maybe feeling like you are.  This month I have some projects going on and some parties so I don't know if it'll be a great reading month.

May's books -
Shadowfever
Lover Unleashed
A Kiss Of Shadows
Little Bee
The First Cut

I enjoyed all but Little Bee which was my book club choice for May.  Not my cup o' tea!  This month I got a bit of a head start since I began Dead Reckoning the last couple of days of May.  Here's my list for June -

Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 11)Beneath A Red Blood Moon (Vampire Series)Finishing Touches
Three Wishes: A True Story of Good Friends, Crushing Heartbreak, and Astonishing Luck on Our Way to Love and MotherhoodJacob (The Nightwalkers, Book 1)The Vampire's Seduction

Yes it looks like another PNR month for me but for the two book club choices ;) We'll see if I stick with it or if I change my mind.  I do have my Mary Higgins Clark challenge, which I have just failed miserably at and my In Death challenge so we'll see.
