A New Meme

This is a brand new meme hosted by Jen from In The Closet With A Bibliophile.  She says since she is always asked what is her fave book or song, she would make a meme of it.  So....what is your fave book and song for this week?

My fave song is Muse's Revolution, I love that song and when I walk in the morn and it comes on my pod I just wanna bust loose!  Book, well this week I don't have a book I just love.  Even though I finished Voyager and did love it, it's not my fave so far.  We'll see what happens next week ; )

just pause the playlist at the bottom so you can hear the song :)

So click on Jen's blog title and join the fun!

Voyager By Diana Gabaldon (review)

Voyager (Outlander)
Voyager
Diana Gabaldon
Paperback 1072 pgs.
Delta

Before I review, I must say that I wound up loving this book just like the others.  I wouldn't say it's my fave so far, that's still #1, Outlander, but Diana Gabaldon crafts a great tale.  What I will say is that it gets bogged down in minor details and storytelling that can probably cut about 500 pgs out and still be a great book.  I have browsed the details of the others as well and have found they are major tomes too, with as many as 1400 pages!!!  Phew, I'm in an Outlander challenge that goes till January so some of my fall reading is definitely going to be this series.

That said on to the review.  I know there will be some minor spoilers that is also in the basic book descriptions on Amazon and Barnes and Noble, so if you want to be completely clueless, stop now.

Claire goes back to Scotland 20 years after she returned to her present time under the wishes of Jamie, who was going to battle on Culloden Field.  She was pregnant and he didn't want her to be alone in Scotland, nor die.  He had no clue if she'd make it back nor did she, but return she did.  To say her present day husband Frank, was shocked to see her after 3 years is the understatement of the century!  But he took her back and raised Claire and Jamie's daughter as his own and loved her dearly.  That is the only good thing I will say about Frank.  Read them to find out more : )

Claire decides she needs to find out just what happened on that battlefield and that Brianna should know who her real father is.  She hooks up with Roger Wakefield, who's foster father was the historian who helped Frank trace his own roots and now Roger is going to help her.  She finds out that Jamie didn't die in battle, and after the initial shock of the whole situation, Bree tells her mom she most go back and find him.  This was a rough one for me, I don't know if I could leave my child, not knowing if I'd make it through, let alone if he was still alive, but go she does and the adventure begins again.

Of course Miss Gabaldon details excruciatingly what happened to Jamie in the 20 yrs gone by.  And yes they were tormenting and heartbreaking.  If this poor guy isn't the Andy Sipowicz (NYPD Blue) of the Scottish Highlanders, I'll eat my shoe!  When Claire comes to him he nearly faints!!

Of course there are kidnappings and fighting and pirates, and a nasty evil witch who I can't stand!  Some things happened between Jamie and Claire and she makes me mad.  She is so tough and yet at times she is a wimp that doesn't fit the picture for me, with some silly bad romance novel misunderstandings that aggravated me and made me want to yell.  It was nice to see Fergus again, Jamie's adopted son who is now grown and very handsome, but the fact that he married a 15 yr old kinda irked me, would've liked to see him with a real beauty, but those were the times where older men married children.

I was amazed that in this series so far, not 1 but 2 men desired Jamie with intense fierceness.  Quite interesting.  The difference being one was a bastard, the other quite the opposite.  Their journey takes them on the high seas to find Jamie's nephew who was kidnapped and then onto the new world.

What will always stay with me is how much they love each other.  Jamie adores Claire with every fiber of his being, it is a timeless tale of true love and it touches me to my very core.  The fact that the last 1/3 of the book was so intense, such a page turned flipped me out.  Most books start to wind down and wrap up and this just ramped up instead!  Of course I will continue the journey to see what trouble comes their way next.

a favorite part -

"Oh what a tangled web we weave." Claire intoned. "When first we practice to deceive."  He gave me a quick blue glance and the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.  "It gets a bit easier with practice Sassenach," he said.  "Try living wi' me for a time and ye'll find yourself spinning silk out of your arse as easy as sh*t, er, easy as kiss my hand."

I give this book 4 cannnolis

Who is your fave new to you author this year?

I have 2, picking just one, well that's too hard, just like picking only 1 fave book.  I can't seem to do it! Diana Gabaldon is the first.  I started her series Outlander in March and just fell in love with the story and the characters. The second is Chelsea Cain.  This woman can write one wickedly deliciously evil bad mama-jama, and she's a girl baddie to boot!  Just love her Heartsick series.  Talk about to different ends of the spectrum, but I love psycho thrillers and a good love story as well ; )

On a funny side note, while we were in Vegas, a commercial for Eat, Pray, Love with Julia Roberts came on.  I told hubby, that is one book I have NO desire to read, nor see the movie *ducks from thrown tomatoes*  My sis in law sends out an email saying 1st book club mtg on the 27th space limited please rsvp will be picking 1st book to read, bring a list of your faves.  I email saying in Vegas, but ya know I'm in.  Then I text her late the night of asking how it went and what book do ya think they picked?!  You got it E,P,L!!!!  AAAHHHHH  I told her what I said to hubby and she told me to suck it up they want my opinion too : p  I have till 8/31 to read it, blah, but I will, lets see if my opinion changes.  Why don't I wanna read it you ask (or maybe not but since I am an opinionated *itch, I'll tell anyway) I'm not big into self discovery books that blab on about their journey to finding themselves, if you're friggin lost at 30 something give it the hell up, ya ain't gonna find yourself, it's just an excuse to indulge in self absorption.  Okay resume the tomato throwing ; )

Eternal Kiss Of Darkness Group Reading and Discussion

I am dying to start this book!  I love the Night Huntress series and love Jeaniene Frost.  She writes great characters, their personalities just jump off the page.  Since I was going to read it, I'd thought I'd host a group reading and discussion of it.

I will keep it open with a reminder post on the 15th of August for a quick check in and anyone can comment on what their feelings are so far, and then hold the discussion on August 27th.  The full month should give anyone who wants to participate plenty of time to get the book and read it : )  I'll post a group of ?'s that we can answer, and then put a Mr.Linky at the bottom of the post so all can link back to their answers and thoughts to the book.

On another note, I just got back from a great mini-cation to Vegas yesterday.  The hubs, kids and I had such a wonderful time swimming, walking the strip, and just relaxing!  Hubs has been reading James Patterson and loves this author, I'll try to get him to post another review for me ; )  I have finally finished Voyager by Diana Galaldon and will do my review as well.  What a great book it turned out to be!

Tell us about the book you're reading.

I have been reading Voyager, book 3 in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon for 3 wks now!  Yes 3 wks.  I love this series, but Miss Gabaldon gets way too caught up in the minutia of what's happening during that time period.  It is about time travel, Claire Randall being thrown back 200 yrs to Scotland, and the ensuing trials and tribulations that it causes and she experiences.  It is just a wonderful story, but she gets way to bogged down in the what happened during times of separation and the detail of the war with the Britt's and the Scots and so on. I don't think all that detail is so very necessary to the story.  It would probably get rid of about 500 pgs!  It makes for slow going sadly.

That said I would not want anyone to shy away from these books.  Just know they are tome's for sure!

"Mrs. Malcom!" he exclaimed in astonishment.  "Er. . . Reverend Campbell,"  I replied, rather weakly.  "What a surprise."  I dabbed tentatively at a smear of mango on his abdomen, but he took a marked step backward, and I desisted. He looked rather coldly at my decolletage.

I know more, than 2 sentences, but I had to tie them in so they were more cohesive.  On another note, can  you believe I'm STILL reading this book?!  It is taking me forever.  Though at least it's pace is picking up now.  I am in the start of the action, yahoo, only took 1/2 the book!  I love her series, but the minutia is killing me : )

Next up will be #3 of the In Death series by J.D. Robb, Immortal In Death  I'm in a challenge, and I want to catch up.  This is just a great series as well.

Right this instant, what book are you dying to get your hands on, past present or future?

Future, I am dying for the last book in the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning, Shadow Fever!  The last one left us readers with such a nail biting cliffhanger of an ending that I can't wait for January.

There is one present book that I am dying for and that's Lover Mine, the latest in the Black Dagger Brotherhood collection by J.R. Ward.  I haven't purchased it for my kindle yet on the principle of the matter.  I have all of em on my kindle, and this one costs more than the darn hardcover and that's just poppycock!  So at some point it'll come down and then I'll buy it.  I might get the traditional book, I have to think about it since I do have them in digi form already.

Guest Reviewer Precious Blood...I Am So Excited

Why you might wonder?  Well, it's my handsome hubs doing the review!  I try to get books that the 2 of us will enjoy together and he's reviewing this one for me!

    Precious Blood
      Jonathan Hayes
      Paperback 448 pgs
      Harper

    Amazon's Blurb -

New York City medical examiner Hayes provides plenty of authentic forensic atmosphere in his grisly debut. But his tale of a maniacal serial killer loose on the streets of Manhattan dwells too much on the carnage with insufficient focus on his protagonist's emotional state. Dr. Edward Jenner, an occasional private consultant who resigned from his post as a New York City forensic pathologist after the trauma of 9/11, is positive the gruesome crucifixion murder of a young college student is the handiwork of a burgeoning serial killer. When Ana de Jong, the murdered girl's roommate, appears in his loft, desperate for help, Jenner is plunged deep into a world of cruelty and death, a world he tried so desperately to leave behind. As more bodies pile up and the killer's methods become increasingly sadistic, Jenner races to identify the ancient text engraved in the victims' flesh, hoping it will lead him to the truth behind the murders. The somewhat creepy relationship that develops between Jenner and Ana distracts, while fans familiar with the conventions of the serial killer genre will find much of the action predictable. Hopefully, Hayes will combine his impressive forensics knowledge with a fresher plot and deeper characterization in his next thriller.

This is my first attempt at writing a book review.

Why then am I writing one, it's simple, because my wife will just keep asking me to till one of us is dead...so here you go....

I enjoyed this book, it was at times hard to put down.  Very likable lead character, Dr. Edward Jenner who resigned from his post as a New York City forensic pathologist after the trauma of 9/11.  He's been hired as a private consultant after the murder of a college student.  When the murdered girl's roommate appears at his home, the story takes off.  As you get deeper into the book the murders become even more gruesome and sadistic.  My issues: some of the story was a bit predictable, and while they delved into the killers past it never really explained how he developed into this ritualistic super strong psycho and why he was killing in this manner.  That aside, I do however think that Dr. Jenner was such an interesting individual that I look forward to the next book in the series.

Tell us about some of your favorite authors and why they're your favorites!

One of my favorite authors is Stephen King.  I know sounds so cliche, right?  Well I started reading him when I was in my late teens and I just loved how he could scare the pants offa me!!  I guess you could say he was my first author love, I would chomp through his books like a demon.

Who else do I love, Charlaine Harris, without a doubt.  For a long period of time, I'd say about 5 years,  I couldn't sit still enough to read.  It would take me 1-2 months to get through a book because I'd read during my dd's tennis lessons on Saturday and that's it.  When we discovered True Blood on HBO during season 1 my dd said these are books Mama and I want them for Christmas.  Well the 2 of us zooked through them books like a house on fire!!!  I thank Miss Charlaine for bringing my love back full swing.  Oh my, J.R.Ward and dem Brothers, holy moly!!  I just love Vishous, and I read Covet, not to shabby so far.  That gals style is just different, she brands left and right, the Escalades, and the Rolex watches, Kanye blasting on the player.  Her slang is also a bit much, I just don't see Wells saying here's the sitch ; ) but, the woman's got b@lls in her writing and I love it.  Jeanienne Frost, hands down her character Bones is just amazing.  She has crafted a character so real I can hear that vamp's Brit accent whispering in my ear!  For me when an author accomplishes that they are supreme in their talent.  Love Patricia Cornwell, the Scarpetta series never disappoints me.

I could probably go on and on, hhhmmm, are there any authors that any just can't stand?  I can't think of one of the top of my head....

    Glory In Death

Glory in Death (In Death, Book 2)
      Glory In Death
      J.D. Robb
      Paperback 320 pgs.
      Berkley

    Amazon's Blurb -

In the second of this futuristic mystery series, protagonist New York police Lieutenant Eve Dallas looks for a serial killer of prominent career women. Eve tenaciously follows the clues whether they imperil her romantic relationship with a millionaire or her beloved job. Truth and justice are the goals she works resolutely toward and that lead her finally to solve the case, save the life of a friend, and command the respect of her tall, dark, handsome lover. If the supporting characters are somewhat stereotypical and the ending easy to predict, the humor and imaginative slice of mid-21st-century life provide scope for the reader's talents.

This is # 2 of the In Death series.  I am loving it!  Robb has crafted a great character in Lt. Eve Dallas.  She is smart, tough, yet has a vulnerable side to her that makes you like her even more.  Her one friend Mavis needs to be developed some more, she has  great funny potential!  I like that Capt. Feeney is easy around her, calling her kid, and being tough with her too. Roarke is priceless.  This man is confident, extremely powerful, smart, tough, and yet she has brought him to his knee's!  He loves her so very much that it scares the crumbs out of him. Watching this relationship is wonderful.

Someone is killing the city's prominent woman, and Eve is put on the job personally by Commander Whitney for her no nonsense, honest police work that she does.  She decides to put herself in the limelight, deducing that the killer will get pissed at her stealing his thunder, making her a target.  Granting and interview about the case, and out on the town. Her relationship with Roarke affords her that luxury since they are fodder for the gossip columnists.   It also affords her his help and his access to info she normally would not be able to get.

Roarke is trying to cope with the fact that she can't let herself fully be with him yet.  She still holds back a piece of herself.  He does accept that her work is important to her, but he wants all of her.  In one scene as he watches her sleep he sees how she hesitates before turning into him and he has a difficult time with that.  To see such a strong man weak over his love is very touching.

Eve is so devoted to the victims, you feel her exhaustion as she doggedly pursues the killer, often at the expense of her own well being both physically and personally.  She is a great cop, pure and simple.  My most favorite part took place between she and Roarke.  All I'll say is she goes busting into his house, they had had a tiff so she was staying away, his butler Sommerset hates her, she threatens to deck him and then she busts in on Roarke.  After arguing back and forth he tells her to get out, as she turns to go, he throws the switch to lock the doors.  You read to see what happens.

I will be continuing without a doubt and give this book 4 cannolis!

    My Teaser -

"There's going to be blood in that car, Feeney, and on that coat, no matter how much he's scrubbed and sprayed.  I've got to get over to Channel 75."

    kindle edition location 3671-74

Lt. Eve Dallas to Capt. Feeney

As with #1 Naked in Death this book is just great.  I'm getting to know the characters better, and Robb is very good at drawing you into them and wanting to learn more.
