Humorous Paranormal Reading Challenge

This baby is being hosted by Laurie over at Bitten By Paranormal Romance.  I'm a little late in the game, it started in July and runs through December, but I think I can do it : p

We  meet Mercy while she is under a car repairing it.  She's a mechanic who works on foreign cars, owns her own shop and, is a "walker".  What's that?  Well she changes into a coyote, not a were-coyote, she's different.  She hales from a line of skinwalkers, witches who shift into whatever creature's skin they put on.  She happens to be the coyote.  That said, she was raised by foster parents, one of whom was a werewolf.  Her mother felt that would be the best for her so that she could be raised understanding what she was somewhat better. Now on her own her neighbor Adam is the Alpha of the local werewolf pack and she has a dilemma, a newly made were has turned up in her shop and she needs to inform him so there isn't any trouble.  Sadly though there is a lot of trouble.  Someone has come up with a drug that works on were's fast metabolism and is changing people into weres willy nilly.  Mercy gets sucked into this mess and needs the help of all her unusual friends.  Zee, the fae who sold her the shop, Stefan, the vamp, and Samuel her first love.  Of course, the wolves hate the vamps, the fae are suspicious of everyone, and Adam and Samuel flex their dominant muscles over Mercy.

I loved this book!  Mercy is just a great character.  Not over the top kick-a$$ like Anita Blake, not jaded like Kate Daniels, nor spoiled like Faythe from Stray.  Just a regular gal, as much as she can be, that steps up to the plate and does what needs to be done.  Loyal to her friends and having a good heart, I really liked her.  The supporting characters were good too.  Adam and his daughter Jesse, Warren, his second in command, Zee, and Stefan were nice rounded characters and look forward to getting to know them better.  Samuel wasn't bad, but I have a problem with guys who think they have rights to former girlfriends, but that's just me ; )

One funny part involves the vamp Stefan.  Mercy is repairing his VW Vanagon which is tricked out like the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine, and even his cell phone voicemail music is the theme from Scooby Doo prompting Zee to ask, "What kind of vamp uses the music from Scooby Doo for his voicemail?"

I will definitley continue with this series!!

I have to be honest, this book just didn't do it for me.  I feel like it never took off.  Dylan's character wasn't bad, but he was kind of a dud, I didn't develop any real feelings for him.  The story itself wasn't suspenseful at all.  There were 2 parts in the whole book that had potential where I said "Oh man!", one of them coming practically at the end of the book but the author just didn't run with it.

The poor guy is given the boot by his wife, he lives in "the smallest flat in the world" with his mother taking up extended residency, he was fired from the police dept so you really feel bad for him.  His constant statement of  Bev, his wife, coming around she always does was getting old real quick.  The dude is in a slump, so this case could be his ticket out.  He is tenacious and sticks with it following every. single. solitary. lead. that comes along, get my drift.  I was fighting the boredom but stuck through it.  The one character I really liked and probably could've been used more, was retired cop Frank Willoughby.  He was a hard a$$ who didn't get along with Dylan when they were on the job, but made amends and worked quite well together here.

Sadly I can only give this book 2 cannolis

Yes, I must say, I do have Shallow Hal syndrome and sometimes I do look at a cover and say, "Hhmmm, that book looks mighty tasty." ; )  I don't do it often though, since my library would be very small as far as subjects.  Seriously, sometimes that's just what grabs ya.  We eat with our eyes first as well so a publisher would be foolish not to use whatever means to snag a reader in.

Wednesday's Weekly Question.....Hhhmmm

Maybe a meme, maybe not...anyway, just out of curiosity -

Do you finish a book even if it's just absolutely horrid?

Short answer - nope.  Long-winded hot bag of air answer - It really depends.  If I'm reading it for myself I drop it.   Couldn't finish Wicked, just boring as all get out.  Forced my darn self to finish Breaking Dawn, even though it was excruciatingly horrid in my opinion.  I didn't like Meyers writing or plot in it at all.  Why you may ask or maybe not but I'm gonna tell ya anyway, because it was the last one and I felt I needed to finish it.  That is why I will push myself through the last 4 of Laurel K Hamilton's Anita Blake series.  One because, I've come this far after reading 12 or 13 of em I just can't quit now, and 2 another blogger has said it does get better again.  Thank God.  She took one wacky a$$ turn with that series.

Also for book clubs, I will finish a book even if it makes me sick (alla Eat Pray Vomit), so that I am able to give my 2 cents of why the book just blew.  Otherwise life is too short and my tbr waaaaay to gigantic to waste time with kaka books.

So that's it in a nutshell, how bout you : )

Well I had a great reading month!!!  What a bounce back from the pitiful July.  I have gotten through 7 books!  My goal for this month is to whittle down my ARC pile, that is only fair of me.

I am reading this for my book club *Authors By The Alphabet*, and while its just shy of the 500 pgs, that's just fine, I'm in this for fun and I want others to join in and have fun too! If I have a really good month I just might give Kushiel's Dart a try and have two tomes down in a month ; )
